Concord History

Three comprehensive histories of Concord are now available on-line courtesy of the Concord Public Library's website and are accessible by clicking on the links below.

A History of Concord, by Nathanial Bouton, 1865.

  • An in-depth volume that covers the city's history from its founding in 1726 through 1856.

History of Concord, NH, by James O. Lyford, 1903 (vol. 1 of 2), (vol. 2 0f 2 )

  • Lyford focuses on the 18th and 19th centuries. Vol. 1 provides a chronological narrative of this period, and Vol. 2 contains detailed history of churches, schools, trades, and professions.

A Capital for New Hampshire, by Grace P. Amsden, written 1930-50's (3 vols.)

  • This is a charming and well researched, yet never published, manuscript that records the history of Concord and all the buildings that were constructed by the early 19th century. Stories of many of the city's notables, such as Count and Countess Rumford, Franklin Pierce, Robert Rogers, and Isaac Hill are recounted. Mrs. Amsden also included photographs of many of the buildings, a number of which disappeared long ago.

Concords' early city records (1732-1925) are also available via this link.

In addition to these publications, there are numerous other publications relating to various aspects of the city's history. Of particular note are:

  • The History of Penacook, NH from Its First Settlement in 1734 up to 1900,
    by David Arthur Brown, (1902).
  • A Bend in the River,
    by Stephen Winship, (1966).
  • Capital Views: A Photographic History of Concord 1850-1930,
by Elizabeth Durfee Hengen & Gary Samson, (1994).
  • Village of Penacook, New Hampshire, An Architectural and Historical View,
    by Elizabeth Durfee Hengen, (1990).

These publications and many more can be found in the Concord Room at the Concord Public Library, the New Hampshire Technical Institute library, and at the New Hampshire Historical Society, whose catalogue is available on-line at: http://nhhistory.library.net

Capital Views: A Photographic History of Concord 1850-1930 is still in print and can be purchased at the Museum of New Hampshire History in Eagle Square and Gibson's Bookstore, 27 So. Main St., Concord (224-0562). Proceeds benefit future historic preservation projects in Concord.
