Highlights of Our Fifth Year
|
|
|
- Contracted with John Milne to be editor, and Richard Osborne to be project manager of the 20th Century History of Concord, our primary current activity.
- Benefited from the research work of interns Andrew Spivak and Laura Boynton during summer 2007, and from intern Geoffrey Kirsch in spring-summer 2008. Geoffrey, a Concord native and Dartmouth College student, is also expected to author a substantial section of our 20th century history.
- Completed a mapping grant with the City of Concord aimed at producing accurate maps of our city in 1900, 1950 and 2000. Intern Andrew Spivak and former trustee Judy Dickinson completed the grant work in the summer of 2007, and Judy continues to work on the maps, using a software called "ArcView" which the Society purchased. The maps will become part of the history book and will be available on this website when completed.
- Occupied office space generously donated by the law firm of Sulloway & Hollis at 29 School Street. Our office is computer equipped and the Society's phone (228-8101) is located there. The Sulloway firm has also graciously made available its conference rooms for our monthly trustee meetings.
- Executed a website hosting agreement with the Concord Monitor. The paper has given us much support in designing and maintaining our site. We are also indebted to volunteer Roberta Woods of the F.P. Law Center for her previous work with the site. Our new website volunteer is Roy Schweiker of Concord, and Roy is helping us immensely. Trustee John Hare is the chair of our website committee.
- Videotaped numerous oral histories under the guidance of Jeff Trombly and Frank Jillson, trustees who co-chair our Oral History Committee. Excerpts from these will be useful in the history book, and we plan to work with Concord TV and WKXL Radio, as well as with our website, to give these insightful interviews wider dissemination.
- Hosted an Oral History Workshop in conjunction with the NH Humanities Council and the UNH Center for the Humanities during March 2008. The event was attended by about 25 people from the Society and other organizations, and they gained valuable advice from presenter Jo Radner. We hope to repeat this workshop so others in our area can get help in preserving the memories of our leading citizens.
- Continued our fundraising efforts for the history book project, led by trustee Steve Winship and volunteer co-chair Mary Susan Leahy. We expect to reach our $200,000 goal within the coming months. We have applied for a grant from the NH Charitable Trust and hope to receive favorable news this summer.
- Accepted former Concord Mayor Martin Gross as chair of our Editorial Advisory Board, which provides valuable assistance in the writing and editing of the history book. Charter members Liz Hengen, Stu Wallace and Jim Garvin are continuing with the board.
- Welcomed WKXL owner and former US and NH Senator Gordon Humphrey as a member of our Board of Trustees.
- Thanked Polly Berry Johnson for her five years of service as a trustee as well as her decades of advocating the preservation of Concord's history.
- Re-elected Jim Milliken as Chair, Jeff Trombly as Vice Chair, Jill Wilson as Secretary and Valerie Blake as treasurer of the trustees.
